Mac Mail Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox behaviours > Delete after one day, or week etc.
Create a smart mailbox with these criteria:
Set the date to what every you want and you can then delete all of the emails that fill the smart album in one fell swoop.
You can add other criteria to exclude emails from certain senders, etc. to narrow down those that you delete.
In addition to what has been suggested you can right click on trash and "erase"
Thank you sir! I've tried this, but i think that this behavior is good from now only... I've still got mail from 2021 stacked up, (I guess I hadn't tossed any in quite a while). I REALLY do appreciate your rapid response!
Hello! I created a New Mailbox and followed your instructions, but i cannot add anything to it. I'm going to wait until the morning to see if it takes until after midnight to go into effect. I really hope that this fixes my problem!

You don't add messages to it manually. It's automatic if you set the date correctly.
