can you connect iMac 2013 21.5 for external display to MacBook 2020 M1- have the cables as YouTube has mention. F2 does not work, connecting cables nothing. So is this a lost cause help please.
iMac Line (2012 and Later)
Unfortunately, that setup is not supported by Apple. The iMac cannot be used as a monitor for any of the newest Macs and target display mode is no longer a feature of macOS.
As Apple states them, here are the rules for target display mode on iMac:

Per the link above:
• Make sure that your target iMac is using macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 or earlier.
• The source Mac must have been introduced in 2019 or earlier and have macOS Catalina or earlier installed.

+1, sorry no Target Display Mode has been dead since 2014 and will not work with any M1 based Mac or any Mac running Catalina or later. You would be wise to simply purchase an external display for the MB 2020.
