Diagnosis of com.apple.hiservices-xpcservice not responding

I have a new M1 Macbook Pro running the latest Monterey OS. I have been plagued with the subject problem since acquiring the laptop. I have done a variety of "diagnostic" tests to try and identify the cause. It occurs with or without an external monitor attached. However, it appears correlated to the computer waking from sleep mode with certain software running. I have replicated it with Microsoft Office apps running and waking the computer. Similarly, with the Stocks app running and waking the computer.

May not happen immediately but is preceeded with an increase in memory usage by the service upon waking the computer.

Just replicated it again, as I type this. Waking the computer with Apple Messenger and Google Chrome running cause no issues. Waking the computer with Microsoft Outlook running caused the issue.

Has anybody figured out how to eliminate this issue?

Thanks

Perhaps, this issue is resolved? I ran EtreCheck Pro which found a couple of "minor issues". A couple of residual files in Library/LaunchAgents that were left by previoulsy uninstalled applications. Removed those and have not had the com.apple.hiservices-xpcservice issue since. Need to run longer to confirm it has really disappeared but looks good so far. Will update in a week if problem resurfaces.

Finally, did what I should have done weeks ago...complete eraser of ssd and clean install of Monterey 12.5. Re-installed all apps/programs and recovered all personal files from Google Drive that connects nicely to both my Mac and Windows computers...platform agnostic.

I guess Macs are no different than Windows computers. Need to do a clean install every now and then. So far so good.

Potential cause? Clearly related to computer waking. Also, now correlated to quitting applications. Problem has not arisen, yet, since I stopped quitting applications and since I started ensuring that I did not wake computer immediately after enabling sleep. Seems to indicate an issue with one or more applications not cleaning up correctly, or quickly enough, after quitting or sleeping. Will work this hypothesis for the next week or two to see if problem arises, again. Looks very promising at this time.

Have decided to just restart computer if too many applications are active...not quitting applications. Only had to do this once in the past week.

On my computer, a precursor to the issue is memory usage by com.apple.hiservices-xpcservice drifting up over 2.5 MB and eventunally jumping to around 3 MB. Finally becoming unresponsive around 3 MB.

The saga continues. Anyhow, proven wrong so many times before. Will see if this holds.

My Prior comment was the following:

Perhaps, this issue is resolved? I ran EtreCheck Pro which found a couple of "minor issues". A couple of residual files in Library/LaunchAgents that were left by previously uninstalled applications. Removed those and have not had the com.apple.hiservices-xpcservice issue since. Need to run longer to confirm it has really disappeared but looks good so far. Removing those files seemed to delay com.apple.hiservices-xpcservice becoming unresponsive. However, it did not eliminate the problem.

I am now thinking it is the activity monitor itself that is causing the issue. I am now quiting the activity monitor and removing it from the dock after every use, ensuring that it is never active when the computer sleeps. So far, so good. Will continue to monitor to see if the subject service become unresponsive.

If you have ideas of other diagnostic checks, please share.

Thanks

There appears to be MacOS incompatibilities or issues with the M1 chip causing this and other problems. Our family has 4 apple computers, 3 new laptops with variations of the M1 chip and 1 with an intel chip. Intel chip works great...memory usage for com.apple.hiservices-xpcservice is below 1 MB and stable. All M1 chip computers have that service consuming upwards of 2 MB and rising (memory leak?) with issues appearing over time. In addition, activity monitor reported memory usage for the intel computer is accurate while reported memory usage for the M1 computers are all inaccurate...memory used does not equal the sum of app, wired and compressed memory?

A reasonable explanation would be that there are issues with the M1 chip or incompatibilities between it and MacOS.

In the meantime, my new 12th generation Intel and Windows 11 work great...no issues. Just saying.

Would be curious if anyone is having these issues with an Intel based Mac?

This does not seem an issue— I would ignore it.

you see the same on a Intel MBP with no external monitor attached...

Are there other issues independent of < com.apple.hiservices-xpcservice > ?

or an associated issue beyond <com.apple.hiservices-xpcservice> not responding?

please explain...

an XPC service is "internal to macOS" — that’s half baked code that needs to be investigated by macOS Engineering... not something to be sorted by the end user.

Occurred with Apple Mail...same as Outlook. It is correlated to computer waking from sleep. Just cannot figure out the other trigger...external monitor connected, particular software, activity monitor... Hard to neglect an unknown operating system defect that might be indicative of a more pervasive issue. Unfortunate that Apple will not address it.
