Did you first format it using a Mac? Mac formatted iPods don’t work with PCs and vice versa. If you formatted it using a Mac, you will have to wipe it and reformat the iPod’s hard drive.
Then I would say the hard drive is dead. You’ll need to change it out in order for it to sync properly. You will also have to reformat it.
Thanks for the reply! It has only been used with a PC since new. I had synced it up about 1 year ago. The last time I tried to sync it wiped out all the music I had on it and was only able to load a few songs at that time. I had not tried since then till today. The PC recognizes it as a usb drive but itunes does not see it as a device.
