8 Kernel Panics in One Day

8 kernel panic crashes in one day yesterday, 5 the day before. Before that it was once very few days. I could use a pointer on what's causing it. Moving the laptop seems to trigger it.

The kernel panic is in the internal NVMe (aka your internal SSD).

And the kernel backtrace indicates you are in the kernel storage driver.

There is a good chance this is a hardware failure, but an easy quick test is to remove the 3rd party

com.google.drivefs.filesystems.dfsfuse

kernel extension, and see if that changes the behavior. This kernel extension also plays with storage, so it is in the ball park of possibilities.

You could try running the Mac hardware diagnostics

Unfortunately DriveDx is unlikely to show any issues with the SSD. Usually when I've personally seen this failure ("nvme: a fatal error occurred") on our organization's Macs, the SSD's health report looks clean since the problem is usually caused by the SSD's controller. I agree with the others that you most likely have a bad SSD. However, if you are using a third party SSD, then maybe the SSD adapter being used is bad, otherwise the SSD is most likely bad. From reading these forums, the only third party SSD adapter that seems to be reliable for using a third party SSD is from Sintech.

OWC does sell a direct fit SSD which does not require any adapters.

This failure will only get worse to the point where this SSD may no longer be accessible, so make sure you have a good backup of your data.

You should always have frequent and regular backups of your computer and all external media (including the cloud) which contains important & unique data.
