Desktop has disappeared as an option in my Finder Favorites sidebar

How can I add Desktop to my Finder Favorites sidebar options in Finder Preferences without removing it from the iCloud list in the sidebar? (I still want my desktop files to be accessible on iCloud.)

Until this week, Desktop was in my Favorites list, but now it isn't—and there's no + symbol in the Finder Preferences window to let me add it.

Desktop appears only in the iCloud list below the Favorites list. If I drag it to the Favorites list, it vanishes from the iCloud list. Will my desktop files no longer be accessible on iCloud if I move Desktop up to Favorites?

With Desktop & Documents in iCloud Drive enabled, Desktop and Documents shows up under iCloud Drive.

While you can drag the Desktop and Documents to Favorites, they often do not work correctly from there.

You can drag them from iCloud Drive into Favorites, but I wouldn't do that as it helps to have another place to go when the ones in Favorites stop working.

Select one from iCloud Drive, click on the folder name in the title bar to show the folder icon, then click+hold folder, then drag into Favorites.

There is nothing inherently wrong with having "Documents and Desktop in iCloud". It is a personal choice.

You just need to be aware of it. As it is, your Desktop folder, and your Documents folder, are in iCloud.

This means that files you put there will be uploaded to iCloud, and may or may not have a physical local copy, depending also on other settings, like "Optimize Mac Storage".

This can be extremely useful, or a nuisance. If one has a mac with only 128GB of storage, and a large iCloud allotment, it may be the way to keep everything.

If one has, say a 1TB mac, and only 5GB of free iCloud space, then there may not be enough space to keep your Documents and Desktop folders in iCloud.

Thanks Luis. I have a 3TB iMac, 2TB of iCloud storage with 1.5TB still available. Plus a Time Machine backup drive and extra backup hard drives. (I've been fanatical about backing everything up ever since my hard drive melted down in 2011.)

Returning to my original question: How can I change my Finder Preferences so that Desktop is in Favorites when it isn't an option I can click? (It used to be there; I still don't know why it vanished.)

Nope. Not today. For some reason, I was able to move it yesterday (then chickened out because I was afraid I'd be removing backups of my Desktop files from iCloud). It doesn't matter if the boxes are clicked or un-clicked. I've even tried force quitting and reopening Finder. Maybe I'll reboot my computer and see if I can do it then. Or maybe I'll just give up and the problem will resolve with the next OS update. I think I've pestered you enough. Thank you for your input and patience.
