How do I delete message from my iPad without deleting from my iPhone?

I've read all the replies to similar questions. The advice was to turn off messages under both the iphone and ipad under iCloud and then delete the messages on the iPad. I tried a couple messages and it looked like it worked. However when I went to turn my messages back on for my iPhone where I do wanted them synced with iCloud, the messages were getting copied over to my iPad again. The whole point of this was not to have the messages synced.

I tried signing out of iCloud to see if that was a workaround. First, all of the messages and photos were still there. Second, I had to sign back in to access the messages so that defeated the whole purpose of trying that route.

I don't understand why there isn't a simple way to do this. I would prefer to have no messages or photos on my iPad from the iCloud or my iPhone, unless I actively choose them there or say to sync them. Is there not a simple way to change a setting to do that? What year is this?!

On your iPhone:

Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding - set to OFF

This will inhibit forwarding and synchronisation of Cellular SMS/MMS messages.

  • Blue Bubbles = Apple iMessage
  • Green Bubbles = SMS (Text) or MMS (Picture) messaging over Cellular messaging services

If you wish to inhibit all Messages on your iPad, you’ll have to sign-out from the Messages App:

Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > [AppleID] > Sign Out

Isn't this an iCloud issue...? Isn't the fact that messages are being duplicated on his iPad due to the way iCloud functions...? Aren't iMessages duplicated across devices the same way email is?

@gnomeattic, I think what you're wanting to do isn't possible because both your phone and iPad use the same iCloud ID and, so, due to the way iCloud functions (it's a syncing service, not a backup and storage service) your messages will duplicate. There's no way round this, it's how iCloud was designed to function.

The only way round this, is to use iMessage on one device only. If you don't want messages on your iPad, then you'll have to stop using iMessage on your iPad.

As messages are predominantly text, I shouldn't think deleting them would reclaim you much space, anyway.

Great - so you have now managed to sign-out from Messages. Once signed-out, any messages that are stored on your iPad are entirely local - and your should be able to delete them.

To delete messages from your message window, long-touch any message to expose an Action Menu; tap the More item - also marked with an ellipsis (“…”) icon - this will allow you to individually select each of the messages with a conversation that you wish to delete. When you’re done with marking the messages, tap the Delete button at the bottom of the screen.

Repeat as necessary for each message conversation.

As for Photos appearing on your iPad, you have evidently enabled Photos in iCloud on all devices - this being consistent with your Messages issue.

On your iPad, in settings, you simply need to disable all the iCloud services that you don’t wish to use:

Settings > [Your Name / AppleID] > iCloud - disable everything that you don’t wish to synchronise via iCloud with other devices.

Assuming that you’d like your received/sent messages to be replicated to iCloud and iPad and iPhone - but deletions from your iPad not synchronised with your iPhone…

On your iPhone:

Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding - set to ON - and explicitly enable your iPad from the list of devices

Settings > [Your Name / AppleID] > iCloud > Messages - set to ON

On your iPad:

Settings > [Your Name / AppleID] > iCloud > Messages - set to OFF

With these settings, messages that arrive will appear on both iPhone and iPad - but when deleted from iPad, the deletion will not be replicated to your iPhone.

I appreciate that you’re frustrated - but please understand that working through a problem is not necessarily straightforward. Either you have a strange issue that is not immediately obvious, or perhaps you are having difficulty with the instructions that I am making considerable effort to convey.

You should always be able to sign-out from Messages…:

Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > [AppleID] > Sign Out

Maybe there's a little misunderstanding... I do NOT want messages replicated to my iPad - is there a way to opt out or turn it off? I want to free up all that space.

Put simply, I would like all the messages off my iPad to never be synced, replicated, saved, etc. but be deleted and never come back... without affecting my iPhone messages.

Please tell me there's a simple way to do that. It would really make my day and the hundreds of other people who have all asked similar questions on here and elsewhere on the internet.

Thanks in advance!

Hi. Text message forwarding has been off the whole time. Yet was still syncing messages when I turned back on messages in iCloud on my iPad. I've never messaged on my iPad and the messages are all there, despite having forwarding always off.

I tried your instructions for inhibiting all messages on my iPad, but there's no sign out option there. When I go to send and receive, it only asks which phone or email i can receive imessages to and reply from.

I don't feel like you're answering my questions directly. Is there a way to simply remove all the text messages from my iPad without it affecting my iPhone?

I don't imagine deleting the messaging app will do it. I tried signing out of icloud and that didn't do it. Whenever I toggle any settings in iCloud, it doesn't do anything. Perhaps you can provide a video demonstrating how to do it?

Hi. This response is not consistent with what the other person was saying or the rest of the internet...

To respond more directly, I've turned messages off in iCloud but messages are still showing up there. And when I sign out of iCloud, I can't delete messages without logging back in.

My messages are 17GB... so not fair to assume all text. And I don't want to delete them on my phone.

I've never used texting/messages on my iPad. Or Photos. Yet it's filled with both. And I don't want it filled with either.

Could either of your provide simple step by step instructions on how to remove the messages and photos from my iPad without affecting my iPhone? That's all I'm asking.

No, email messages are not duplicated between devices using iCloud.

For email, each device will download mail messages directly from the email provider’s Mail servers.

i cannot get into the message app without logging back into imessage. which i believe gets me right back to where we started.

i don't see a way to circumvent the login message to get to my messages to delete them when i'm logged out.

the pop-up says imessage, sign in with your apple id to activate immesage. learn more about imessage. login credentials. forgot apple id/password.

there's no opt out or anything. please advise.
