Top row of new magic keyboard not working?!

I just bought a new keyboard for my mac and whilst it connected fine, the top row is working solely as function buttons and not normal commands (eg brightness, volume etc). Can anyone help?

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.13

Have yiu checked "Use F1, F2, ect. keys.." in the Keyboard tab of Keyboard system preferences?
