Mail App Says user name or password is incorrect

Happened on both iPads so not a hardware problem. We have 3 gmail accounts, no problem using gmail app or gmail web mail. Two days ago ipad Mail app would not access gmail accounts saying user name or password was incorrect. Finally fixed the problem by deleting accounts, uninstalling/reinstalling Mail app and adding back accounts. All worked fine until today and same problem came back. Have tried everything I can think of - changed google passwords, reset network connections, deleted accounts, uninstalled/reinstalled Mail app, added back accounts. When I add back the new account, Mail app verifies the email account but, after I add the incoming/outgoing server info, I get the message.

Any ideas?

Google have changed their authentication requirements for Google Mail mail accounts configured for password authentication - and for non-Google mail clients, now requires use of an App Specific password for each mail client/device.

You will need to generate a unique password for your iPad Gmail account - that will differ from your normal Google Account Password. AOL, Yahoo, Google, Microsoft now all use App Specific Passwords when using anything other than their own email client Apps.

If you need to generate an App Specific Password, you’ll need to log-in to your Google Account management webpage - using a web browser - and generate the Password from the appropriate account security page.
