Previous discussion on this topic suggests that older downloads may have this problem. However I have just purchased a song which turns out to be m4p and protected, so I cannot convert it to mp3. So it seems this issue persists even for recent purchases. As I need my songs in mp3 format, does this mean I need to forget downloading from Apple?

Be sure to follow the steps outlined in this article: Convert a song to a different file format with the Apple Music app or iTunes for Windows. Note that the steps vary slightly if you're converting songs in your music library versus converting songs from files in a folder or on a disk.
