Password management...Key Chain on iPhone vs Mac, Secured Notes on Notes, secured notes on Keychain on MBP etc...

I have been using the password manager app Password + ever since I was on a Palm Pilot back in the early 2000. Recently PP + has notified used they will no longer support the app and users have to migrate elsewhere. I use PP+ to store web site, app and other misc info (such as passport info etc).

My objective was that I wanted to take that opportunity to migrate to an Apple solution. I have been using Keychain with Safari to access web site and app on my iPhone...that works fine and other Apple products too because of iCloud sync.

Recently Apple has added a "Notes" box in the Keychain records which is very useful to store text info about the record. However to store info such as passport info (for example)...that can't be done on keychain unless you create a dummy Web Site, User name and Password then use the Notes box to store the passport number, expiry date etc. Keychain was simply not meant to store such misc info. It is not a good workaround.

Then I turned to keychain on my MacBook Pro. I noticed a tab for "Secured Notes" which I thought would be secured notes from Notes...but NO it isn't. I felt I had a solution there but those "Secured Notes" on the MBP are not accessible elsewhere through iCloud.

I called in that situation to Apple support and I was told to use "Secured Notes" as a solution of misc info type of secured records. I did a few tests and my issue with Secured Notes is that you have to create a new password to secure the note which does not work with FaceID. You are warned if you forget that newly created password well you are in deep trouble. I am not sure about the level of security with those secured notes on Notes...Spotlight will read the title but not the detail of the record.

Another issue is the notes box on the iPhone keychain is not available on the same keychain record on MBP...

Please do not suggest that I use another password manager...I know that. I want to migrate to an Apple product.

I think Apple has some consistency improvement opportunities !!

Thoughts anyone ?

Hello YvesFo,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

You might consider using iCloud Keychain to help manage your passwords:

"With iCloud Keychain, you can keep your passwords and other secure information updated across your devices.

iCloud Keychain remembers things, so that you don't have to. It auto-fills your information—like your Safari usernames and passwords, credit cards, and Wi-Fi passwords on any device that you approve. Have more questions about iCloud Keychain?"

Please let us know if you have further questions.

Cheers!

Hi Justin_900. Judging from your response it looks like you did not read my post. As I said, I already use keychain. My issue is with records that don't have a Web Site associated to them. For instance, passport information. Where would you store the information related to your passport such as passport number, expiry date ?
