iPhone dims when in direct sunlight

Before I start, I'm not interested in replies about my phones temperature, trying true-tone or suggestions that my pupils are simply adjusting to the light. Thanks

When I'm at the beach or pool and there's bright sun, my screen dims to the point I can barely see anything. The phone is not hot and my brightness setting stays all the way up. If i remove it from the light it will return to normal.

Tried settings and tried messing with true-tone. It had no effect.

i think that the Retina display is responding to the light but beyond that I really don't know.

im looking for a fix - are there any suggestions?

i really appreciate any constructive replies - thank you

Hello JimmyNuggets,

When your iPhone is exposed to sunlight, it will result in the temperature increasing on the device itself. Which may result with the following error: If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch gets too hot or too cold - Apple Support

If you see a temperature warning screen

If your device exceeds a certain temperature threshold, it will present a temperature warning screen similar to this:

Image shows temperature warning.

An iPhone showing this message might still be able to make emergency calls.

To resume use of your device as quickly as possible, turn it off, move it to a cooler environment (away from direct sunlight), and allow it to cool down.

We realize that you didn't want to hear about the temperature alerts or mention it, however, we believe it's important to do so; since this would be normal behavior for the device in sunlight.

If you don't believe this is normal behavior or something else, then it would be best to contact Apple Support

Wishing you the best, take care.
