IPAD shuts off as if it is overheating

What would cause an Ipad (4th gen) to shut off randomly, as if it is overheating?

Are you seeing on-screen indication that your iPad’s thermal management is attempting to regulate its temperature?

If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch gets too hot or too cold - Apple Support


If your iPad is in a fitted case, try removing the iPad from the case - as this may help with natural cooling. Try reducing screen brightness - as high brightness can significantly impact heat generation, particularly when combined with CPU-intensive tasks.
