Do you have headphones, buds or a speaker system plugged into the iMac’s Headphone Output Port?

Go to Apple > System Preferences > Sound > Output and look to see where the sound is being sent to.

If you have head phones or something plugged in, unplug them and watch to see if the Sound output changes from external to internal.

If not, try plugging and unplugging a set of headphones to see if the output changes to external and then back to internal.
