deleting items on ipod

I would like to know how to delete items from the ipod. I sold it to a friend and would like to delete some songs etc.

Really, you should just restore the iPod via iTunes. This will wipe all content from the iPod and set it back to its original default settings. That way your friend will have no problem setting it up with their computer.

On a side note, your friend will have to *Erase and Sync* the iPod upon syncing it with his or her iTunes library before they can use it, unless the *Manually manage music and movies* option is enabled from under the Summary tab.
