Visual Alerts/Notification flashes

I bought used iPad Airs for my elderly parents, who are also deaf. They mostly just fiddle around - look at Facebook (they do no posts, comments, or likes). Play a few games.

Recently my father has been in and out of the hospital and nursing home for rehab. Possibly permanently. My parents were born in 1930 and 1934 respectively. They are old school. No lip reading, no hearing aids, when the started school at age 5 - they had no comm skills to speak of. They learned ASL and no English. However they do learn English words for ASL signs. So they might write out “I’m going to the store, do you want to come with me.” Like this: “Go store. You go?”

All this separation has has made them both feel particularly isolated and seems to be degrading their thinking skills. Dad for sure is in the middle stages of dementia.

I tried setting up Google Duo, and Sorensen VRS on the two iPads. I’ve not looked at FaceTime because - I want them to be able to contact people regardless of the platform.

It works. But here is the problem. They need visual notifications. Unless they are willing to stare at the screen waiting for the Duo screen to come up and give them the choice of decline or accept the call - they frequently miss each other.

I found that iPads with Flash can turn of the LED to flash them. The iPad Air does not have this feature. I found a real simple bang up program that will light up the screen. It can be configured to flash on and off. Pretty cool.

How can I set up a trigger to turn on the flashlight app when google duo is ringing? It would get their attention!

thanks,

Wynne

I do appreciate your attempt to assist. But I already stated the Air iPads do not have flash. Isn’t it customary to refer to the first generation without the number?

What I’m looking for is the ability to trigger the flashlight app I downloaded. This app uses the screen to flash or turn up the light on the screen.

But it doesn’t have to be this particular app. Just just the ability to “trigger” the light up app. The app I downloaded from the App Store is called, ironically “Flashlight”. It also creates a strobe effect and can send an SOS in lighted Morse code.

Deaf people use light apps in all their walks of life. A lightbulb wired to a doorbell. A lightbulb wired to an alarm clock. A light to trigger the baby monitor. While my parent were born deaf and have always had to compensate with light triggers and sharper observation skills…there is only so much at age 91 and 87. I also know many people who go deaf after a start in life with hearing intact. lights work well in other situations, such as quiet during a meeting or someone else is napping.

Something like this would be useful to many people for different reasons. I guess I thought by now there would be “something out there to fulfill this need.
