It is not unusual for an iPad or its Power Adapter to become warm (or very warm) when being used or during charging - more so when using some types of iPad case. High screen brightness and/or CPU intensive Apps will also create more heat. Operating in high ambient temperatures will also challenge cooling.

While your iPad and Power Adapter may become very warm in normal use, neither should become uncomfortably hot to handle. If your iPad is in a fitted case, removing from the case will aid cooling of the iPad.

If a process has stalled, this can contribute to unexpected heating. A forced restart of the iPad can clear a stuck process:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On other iPad models: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

If you have any concerns, you should take your iPad along to the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service provider where the technicians can examine and test for faults.
