Will the lightning to 30-pin adapter work with 2009 VW Jetta built-in iPod dock?

I have a 2009 jetta with iPod doc in center console I bought a 30 pin adapter with lightning and iPad plug and it doesn't work when I plug them in.no sound and no charging. should it work? should I try a different cable? or do I need to replace the radio with a aftermarket one that is iPhone friendly?
