Time machine back up

I’ve got an old Mac, and I’m trying to back the whole thing up. Got a usb and started Saturday…..it’s still backing up. Is this because of the amount of data needing backing up (500GB) or am I doing something wrong?

How long does first time machine backup take? I am trying to back up the hard drive of my late 2012 mac mini using an external hard drive set up as "time machine". The internal drive is a 1TB drive which has about 60 GB left on it, so it is very almost a 1TB back up I am attempting. The external drive is 4 TB partitioned with 2 TB for the time machine. I did not expect this to be quick but it has been in the "preparing back up" stage for about 18 hours. Is this a case of being patient or does this level of delay indicate that the time machine back has failed and I need to back up manually? Many thanks for any help

Time Machine "Waiting to complete first back up" I was making a back up of my MacBook using Time Machine, I closed my MacBook as I had to head out, but now when I press the Time Machine icon on top it says "Waiting to complete first back up". It's been stuck at this for a few minutes so I don't really know what to do. Should I click the "Back up now" button or will this make a complete new backup? Or should I just wait a bit longer?

Time Machine Back-up How do I use time machine back up to recover my Mac from a couple of hours ago. I have managed to lose some columns on a spreadsheet held on my desktop.

Likely it's just stuck. I suggest you stop the process, erase the drive and start over.

First backups do take longer, but from Saturday to Monday is not reasonable; couple of hours is more like it .
