When on a long trip, is there a way to pause navigation while you stop to eat or use the facilities, other than to end navigation or silence audible. When on a trip, I don’t really want to end navigation, but It is very annoying for it to say “proceed to the route” when in the ladies’ room or sitting in a restaurant.

You can easily mute the sound.
Once the navigation is in progress on your iPhone screen, tap the speaker icon to Mute the navigation voice:
If you use CarPlay, then during navigation you can press the up arrow as in the picture, and mute the voice there:
