Can I use a different Apple ID just for Messages?

My work iMac is logged into iCloud using my personal Apple ID, which I use for my personal iPhone. This has been convenient, as I can use the Messages app on the iMac to easily read/write text messages sent to my iPhone. I would like to create a new Apple ID just for my work, and have my work iMac log into that, so that there is a cleaner separation between work and personal, and, I'd be able to have the iMac backup files to the iCloud (currently I have that mostly turned off, so that my work iMac does not use up my 200 GB iCloud storage allowance.) But I'd like to be able to keep using my personal Apple ID for Messages. Is that possible? Or will it confuse the iMac? I thought I should ask before trying.... Thanks.

Using a separate Apple ID for Messages is possible. Since you are already using your personal Apple ID for Messages, you don't have to change anything when you change iCloud and other sign ins to your work Apple ID.

I tried it and it does not work. I kept my Messages logged into my personal ID, and in System Preferences -> Apple ID, I logged into a different Apple ID created for work. It worked for a few minutes -- kind of. I could send Messages to other iPhone users, but I could not send group texts that included non-iPhone users. And then my iMac started prompting me to log into Apple iCloud, and then none of my Messages went through, to anyone. Sucks.
