I have the Assistive Touch virtual home button repeatedly reappearing the next day, after I switched it explicitly off in the Accessibility menu. Is there a way to prevent this because I really don't need this feature and rather find it annoying?

Yes. it's failing/damaged. Did you have the display replaced by any chance? That's typical with a display replacement done by an unauthorized service provider. Only Apple and authorize shops have the tools needed to re-pair the touch-id sensor.
Is the physical home button on the device failing or damaged? If so, the virtual home button is enabled automatically.
Make an appointment at the Genius Bar and find out.
Note that if it was ‘refurbished’ by an unauthorized party, Apple likely won’t service it at all.
I doubt it was "unauthorized" but you will know better. The company has a two year warranty on the product, so I'll try that first. The inconvenience is that I have to do that in Germany as it was bought there. The brand names are ALDI and MEDION. It may still be interesting whether you know about their status as to authorized or not.
The home button works fine. It is an iPhone 8 that has more of a touch button than a mechanical one. The OS complains after reboot that there is no fingerprint ID possible. Could that be related?
Thanks for the info. I bought the phone as a refurbished item. I still would like to keep the button from automatically reappearing every day. What would be the cost of fixing that button?
