Revisiting questions of ding sound when I open junk mail

When I open a junk mail item, I get a high pitched ding, even if the item was already in my Junk mail folder. My mail notifications are off and there is no setting specifically for junk mail. I’d really like to know how to turn these off. Running IOS 15.5. on an iPhone 7 Plus.

Hi nlkaren,

If you'd like to stop receiving mail notifications for junk mail, these steps might help.

We know you mentioned you checked your notifications already, but we're wondering if you checked a specific notification setting.

Change your Mail notifications
1. Go to Settings > Mail > Notifications, then tap Customize Notifications.
2. Tap the email account.
3. Select the setting you want, like Alerts or Badges. When you turn on Alerts, you'll see an option to customize your Sounds by changing the alert tone or ringtone.

The information above is from Customize your Mail notifications on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. We're wondering specifically if you have alerts turned on for either the VIP or Favorite Mailboxes. As you will see from the UI note, that you can get these notifications if you have other Mail notifications turned off, but these custom alerts turned on. You should test by checking each email account and mailbox and make sure that there aren't any alerts that you have set to override the "allow notifications" setting.

If the issue continues, let the community know what you found when you checked each extra setting in Settings > Mail > Notifications > Customize Notifications.

We hope that helps with your question and take care!

Thank you. I looked at the custom notification settings and alerts were turned off for my two email accounts. However, there was another item called Thread notifications, and that one had alerts turned on. There’s some fine print that says Thread notifications, whatever those are, will override other notifications settings. So I turned it off and we’ll see if the Junk mail sounds stop happening. I should add that these Junk mail items are stand-alone and certainly not part of threads.

This is to provide an update on the fix I tried by turning off mail thread notifications. I just received a bunch of junk mail and received multiple notifications as they came into my junk mailbox. So the fix involving settings does not work. I’m open to other suggestions. Could Apple support look at it and see if it’s a software bug? Thanks.
