Unable to install Monterey

I downloaded the new monterey os but the installation failed - how do I fix this??

I was trying to do this because my Mac keeps crashing and I though the upgrade might help (currently on Big Sur 11.6.6 (20G624).

But now there is this problem - unsure if the two issue are related. I already threw away the older installer.

help please

You should find out why your Mac is crashing before trying to upgrade because just replacing the system is no guarantee you'll fix the problem.

Therefore, download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

IMPORTANT:

Before running Etrecheck assign Full Disk Access to Etrecheck in the first window that comes up so that it can get additional information from the Console and log files for the report:

Also click the About… vurron and read the info to further permit full disk access.

Copy the report

and use the Additional Text button to include the report in your reply.

We can then examine the report and see if we can determine the cause of the problem.

Thanks for the reply.

I've generated a report and have attached it.

Before running the report I had also trashed Chrome and reinstalled it since the Mac was crashing while using it. I don't think this is related to not being able to install the new OS though? As a side note - I found that I was unable to launch my Mac version of MS Outlook (bought in Apps) so I deleted that app and tried to download a new version. I was also unable to download this.

My wifi seems to be okay but there is no way to hard wire it to my Mac as it would require an ethernet connection. (Verizon LTE router)

In the absence of the Original Contributor @ Old Toad will give this a Honest Effort.

Minor Issues:

Q -  Apps crashing - There have been numerous app crashes.

A - Judging from the Report there are issues that are System Wide Issues. It does appear to the Hardware but related to the Category of System Modification below

Q -  Unsigned files - There are unsigned software files installed. These files could be old, incompatible, and cause problems. They should be reviewed.

A - This is self explanatory and would require the User ( you ) to review what applications need Updating / Upgrading and or Replacing.

Q -  System modifications - There are a large number of system modifications running in the background.

A - Any time, in my experience, running with so many system modification tends to bring on unintended consequences including Application and System Crashes

Hardware Information:

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)

MacBook Pro Model: MacBookPro16,1

Drives:

Q -  disk0 - APPLE SSD AP1024N 1.00 TB (Solid State - TRIM: Yes)

A - No Issues there

 System Software:

Q -   macOS Big Sur 11.6.6 (20G624)

A - Interesting the latest Big Sur 11.6.7 released May 16ish, 2022 is still not installed. Perhaps there are reasons and that is OK. Though, it is usually good to have the computer Fully Up-To-Date before attempting the leap to Monterey

Q -  [Loaded] com.microsoft.OneDriveUpdaterDaemon.plist (Not signed - installed 2019-03-05)

A - About the OneDrive compatibility warning on Mac and maybe part of this computer Issue

Software Installs (past 60 days):

2022-05-27 macOS 11.6.6 (11.6.6)

Q -  2022-06-15 macOS Monterey (12.4)

A - This indicates Monterey 12.4 was at least Downloaded. Does the " Install Monterey" Application existing the Applications Folder. If so, to guard against possible corruption of this Application - Drag and Drop to Trash and Empty Trash.

A - Update Big Sur to version 11.6.7 First and then attempting the Download of a New Version of Monterey.

Do not allow it to Launch or Force Quit is needed

A - Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

A - Only then Launch the Install Monterey

Thanks for the reply. Much appreciated.

There are comments that I'm unclear how to resolve if you can elaborate on how it would be great:

Q -  System modifications - There are a large number of system modifications running in the background.

A - Any time, in my experience, running with so many system modification tends to bring on unintended consequences including Application and System Crashes

>>> HOW DO I reduce the number of system modifications running in the background? I'm not sure where to look or how to fix.

>>>> I was not able to update to this version as I got the same errors as when trying to install monterey. Now I'm just focused on why things keep crashing so that maybe I can eventually get 11.6.7 installed

>>> I have done the SAFE MODE launch and done the Disk Repair and cache clearing. None of this has helped with the system crashing.

When it crashes the following happens very quickly.......

I'm usually using Chrome (have switched over to Safari for now) and don't have a lot of windows open or applications. The fan will come on abrubtly and strong then the mac crashes.

I have system/files back ups - maybe I need to clear out my whole system and start from scratch??

Thanks for any /all advise.

Q - " >>> HOW DO I reduce the number of system modifications running in the background? I'm not sure where to look or how to fix.

A - Any Third Party Applications that will interfere with the normal operation of the OS,  is an invitation for disaster and comprising the Operating System

Q - >>> I have done the SAFE MODE launch and done the Disk Repair and cache clearing. None of this has helped with the system crashing.

A - Since the user has already tried this and it fails, it was suggested to Drag and Drop the " Install Monterey " Application to Trash and Empty Trash. Then Re-download the Monterey Installer again and Not to allow it to Launch. Refer to earlier specific instruction.

Should any or all of the above be not within the Users Comfort Zone - suggest making and Appointment at the Apple Genius Bar for tea to have an in-person look at the situation on this computer and perhaps the can resolve or identify why this machine is having so many issues upgrading to Monterey

If going that route - it would be a very good practice to do a Time Machine Backup Before going to see them.
