You should only install apps from the app store. Never from a website or email; App Store apps have been checked by Apple for viruses, trojans and spyware and are generally “safe”. Apps from other sources are not, and, as it’s easy to get a app listed in the app store (there are over 2 million), any app that isn’t in the app store most likely would fail a safety check.
The only exception is business or school “enterprise” apps developed by or for the institution to access their network. And these must be installed from the company or school website only.
BTW, Apple doesn’t check apps in the app store for functionality or usability, only for safety. Functionality is what user reviews are for.
