How does anti-noise work on AirPods Pro?

On the AirPods Pro model, how does anti-noise work? Does this mean an extra sound (or something you’re already listening to) is made louder in the ear so you don’t hear something loud in your environment? I am concerned about ear health and do not want extra sounds coming into my ears.

Any noise canceling device such as this works much the same. In these devices there is a tiny microphone on the outside of the earpiece that listens to ambient sounds. The signal from this microphone is inverted and added to the signal that is being delivered to your ear. Your ear hears the outside sound and the "negative" outside sound added together. This greatly diminishes the sounds bombarding your ear from the outside world, hence the term "canceling". Does this help?
