CarPlay Reboots every 15 seconds after connecting iPhone 13 Pro Max

Exactly like this user reported here:

CarPlay crashes and reboots stereo every … - Apple Community

This issue only started for me the other day, as everything was working fine before then. Every time I plug my iPhone 13 Pro Max into the Pioneer MVH-

1400NEX stereo, it completely restarts the head unit over and over again. It'll charge for about 10 seconds, recognize CarPlay, and then crash the entire stereo right after.

I’ve had this phone for about 6 months and never had this problem until a couple days ago. It may have coincided with my phone updating to 15.5, but I believe I was running 15.5 with no problems for a few days.

I’ve tried other cables and everything I can to try and narrow down the root cause of the issue, but no luck. My girlfriend’s iPhone X still works just fine, so I think it’s definitely something to do with my phone specifically. She’s running iOS 15.4.1

My only leading theory is that it’s some type of bug in iOS or perhaps my phone is trying to draw too much power, causing the stereo to reboot. Any help is appreciated.

It works!

✅✅✅ ~~~ THIS IS THE CORRECT SOLUTION ~~~ ✅✅✅

  1. Go to Settings -> Music -> EQ
  2. Enable the "Late Night" EQ setting
  3. Plug into CarPlay and it will crash again
  4. Disable your EQ setting
  5. Plug into CarPlay again and it will work!

What if I'm already using some EQ setting?

  1. Turn the EQ setting off
  2. Plug into CarPlay and wait until it crashes
  3. Then proceed through steps 1-5 above

I never experienced this issue prior to iOS 15.5, but apparently it's been around for a while. It seems to affect any and all head units regardless of brand. Hopefully Apple can fix it soon, as it is very frustrating to diagnose.

I played around with my issue again today and when I plugged in my phone I was right back to the 15 second reboot, I tried multiple times to resolve with the EQ setting procedure and forgetting the car in the CarPlay menu and neither resolved the issue. I also tried launching the Music app which promptly crashed my 1400nex so I started playing a song in the music app on the phone and when I plugged in the phone to the head unit it started playing music, launched CarPlay and it remained working even after selecting a different source on my 1400nex. Going back to the music app also worked. I turned off my car for about 15 minutes and then went back out to the car and CarPlay did not reboot the head unit. The CarPlay app dropped connection with my 1400nex once while switching sources but did not reboot the head unit and became usable after less than 10 seconds, I haven’t been able to reproduce this connection drop. It almost seems that having the Music app running or suspended in the background keeps the connection up. I’ll play around with it some more and also see if this fix resolves the 10-15 minute reboot I’ve experienced the next time I take a trip in the car. My iPhone 11 max pro was at 32% battery and drawing .97A while connected the entire time so I guess that can be ruled out. Changing the EQ setting while the music app was playing made zero change to the sound as if it wasn’t applying the EQ setting or doesn’t work via CarPlay.

Found some more information about this apparently widespread issue over on developer forums:

There's some helpful info people have been posting over there about enabling the Music EQ and then disabling it again in order to get the crashing to stop. Still have yet to try this, but I'll report back if it works!

That developer thread is fairly old; 15.1 is the latest at the end of that thread.

Try the Bluetooth path.

I’d also try a network settings reset on the iPhone, though that’s a long shot.

If you’re still crashing, check with the vendor about applying that firmware update, and for any known issues. (The apparent version typo in that document is… comforting. Not.)

This might be an Apple problem, but Pioneer will know if they’re seeing general issues.

Having the same problem and sometimes I’ll get a connection to my iPhone 11 pro max for 15 seconds and then reboot, other times it will work for about 10-15 minutes then reboot and occasionally continue to work for another 10-15 minutes and other times go into a reboot loop. My old iPhone 7+ works fine as well

as my wife’s iPhone X. I’ve have limited luck using the “forget this car” option and while

using that option my display will sometimes switch to dark mode on the head unit when forgetting and reconnecting. I’ve also tried the EQ setting option and after trying it several times my unit seems to be stable…… for now. This is absolutely maddening and I almost put my fist through my pioneer head unit while trying to get maps to work. Hard to believe an issue as glaring as this manages to get past testing. Currently running 15.6.1 and the issue started with the prior update pushed out and no issues prior. Monitoring USB shows my iPhone 11 drawing 1.47a at startup then leveling out at .97a which was causing an immediate reboot prior to the EQ trick. My other phones will cycle between .45 and .97 while charging and stay stable. Not sure the power draw is factoring in but figured it worth mentioning.

Actually, un-pairing and re-pairing is no longer working... It worked for the first time and everything ran without crashing for a whole 5 minutes, so I assumed it was all good. But using my car since then, it started having the same disconnect/restart issue again. Now when I try to un-pair and re-pair it doesn't work at all.

I followed this great youtube video on how to update the firmware of a Pioneer MVH-1400NEX stereo, but I'm unable to get my stereo to enable the "Update Firmware" button. It should become enabled if you power on the stereo and make sure all sources are off, but I couldn't get this to work in my case.

My stereo is currently on version 8.9 and the latest version available is 8.10 which came out April 22nd 2020. So I'm not certain an update from 2 years ago would fix an issue I only just started seeing a few days ago anyway...

P.S. Not sure how to unmark this question as solved 🤔

Has anyone found a solution to this problem? I'm experiencing similar issues now...car head unit reboots about 20 seconds after CarPlay connects, then after the reboot it reconnects and reboots again, and so on.

Tried an iPhone on a previous iOS (I'm currently on 15.6) and this problem was not there. This problem only started for me after the latest update to iOS15.6. Without the phone plugged in the head unit stays on no problem, so it's definitely a phone thing.

Hoping this works for me. Having the same issue with an iPhone 12 mini. CarPlay has been essentially been useless to me for several weeks now. It usually happens right after an iOS update and then clears up after a few days but this one has been persistent. It either completely crashes (most common) and reboots the stereo system or CarPlay just quits and restarts after a few seconds.
