What old ducuments? What is the file type? If Microsoft Word, you may need to upgrade to the most recent version, if incompatible with the newest macOS.

yes. You will have to check that the apps you installed to work with the docs are compatible with the upgrade.

Upgrading from what to what, & likely the docs will be the same, but the Applications may no longer work to open them.
