When I check for updates it continuously goes around, but never responds. I am Mac os BigSur 11.6.4

Are you running any VPN, Anti-Virus, or Cleaning apps?
What is the output of this Terminal Command below ?
softwareupdate --list-full-installers
NOTE - run this command softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version xx.x
NOTE - Substitute in the exact location of xx.x above with the latest version of Big Sur listed from your output
I have Malwarebytes that I run occasionally - it does not run scheduled

My Mac does not appear to be updating - when I click on software updates it shows checking for updates, and continuously goes around - never stops
