In addition to what leroydouglas said: go to System Preferences->Keyboard->Shortcuts->Screenshots and make that the correct shortcuts are appearing and the boxes are checked.

Good for you Luis; Sure enough some of the Options were de-selected on my fairly new MAC M1 mini! I guess this was so basic the other good people attempting to help me (much appreciated, all of you) assummed I wouldknow this but in over 10 years with a MACs I've never come accross this before!
