MacStudio Ethernet Issue

I frequently lose connectivity on my MacStudio. I am connected via ethernet as well as WiFi. The ethernet is first (in network settings), and as such has priority. A few times a day I will lose connectivity. I disable my ethernet port and re-enable it, and it works fine after that. I have changed cables and it's not the cable.

From a configuration standpoint, everything is default. It's using IPv4 DHCP @ 1 GB full duplex. Again, to get it working again, all I do is disable/re-enable it. I'm curious if anyone has resolved this. Perhaps changing the Hardware settings to reflect a specific Duplex setting or disabling AVB/EAV mode?

After reporting the issue, which was previously happening a few times each day, I didn't experience the issue again until today. I did a netstat and confirmed there are no errors. I then went into the Network settings and only unchecked the 'Limit IP address Tracking'. Unlike other changes on this tab, it did NOT require me to hit the 'Apply' button. After unchecking this feature I went back to my browser and was able to continue without issue.

It states that when this feature is disabled, iCloud Private Relay will also be turned off. This verbiage is listed next to the checkbox. However, when I go over to the iCloud settings, 'Private Relay (Beta)' is still showing as active.

I'm sure this is some type of bug, but my issue seems to be resolved. I will assume that by unchecking the 'Limit IP address Tracking' box I can be tracked. I don't have any interest in pursuing this with Apple to report the bug. I just wanted to be able to maintain a solid connection. Hopefully it will be resolved in some future release.

Does the Ethernet drop out when the Mac Studio is in normal use or just slow to reconnect after a sleep/wake cycle?

I'm asking this, because I run with Wi-Fi Off and the Ethernet is slow to reconnect (10-15 seconds) after computer wake on a couple of my Mac's running Monterey. This didn't happen or was less notable in earlier macOS versions.

What I do to prevent having to wait on the Ethernet and other sleep/wake issues, is to use the following Energy Saver settings and only allow my Displays to turn off during the day, then only manually sleep or shutdown the Mac at the end of each day.

10GB Ethernet:

The Mac Studio has a 10GB Ethernet port. If you have some fancy equipment at the other end of the cable, it is possible it is trying to make a 10GB connection.

A 10GB (or 5GB or 2.5GB) connection is only stable when cables are excellent and fairly short (like Category-6 rated cables under 100 feet). If either of those are not true, or you have you added patch cables that are not Category-6 rated, you could be seeing it connect at a faster-than-Gigabit speed, then error out and disconnect.

Actual Speed:

The good way to check the actual connection speed USED to be Network Utility, But in Big Sur and later, Apple has deprecated network Utility and now you have to use a Terminal command to see your actual connection speed. First, you need to know what en number the link is. then you use a command like this one, substituting the actual en number.

my main Ethernet connection uses BSD name en5 (as shown in) :

 menu > about this Mac > (system report) > network:

 ifconfig en5 | grep media

with this as my output:

media: autoselect (10Gbase-T <full-duplex,flow-control>)

For Gigabit Ethernet, you should get this instead:

media: 1000baseT <full-duplex,flow-control>

Errors detected:

To see if an Ethernet link is throwing more than a handful of initial errors, you can use Terminal command:

netstat -I en5

This is the resulting output. Counters are In-packets, In-errors, Out-packets, Out-Errors, Collisions. There should never be more than handful of errors from starting up, and in most cases, NONE.

Name       Mtu   Network       Address            Ipkts Ierrs    Opkts Oerrs  Coll

en5   8163  <Link#4>    00:01:d2:1a:00:dd   696697     0   484301     0     0

en5   8163  grantsmacpr fe80:4::461:ea0d:   696697     -   484301     -     -

en5   8163  192.168.0/23  192.168.0.204     696697     -   484301     -     -

If the link were running beyond its ability to run and be stable, for example it auto-speeded to 10GB but the cabling could only reliably support 2.5GB, we would see non-zero errors counts, and errors increasing over time. (and possibly, disconnecting)

The network connection drops while in use. I will be actively using the computer to browse the web (in most cases) and I will click on a link and it fails to load. This could be a link to the same site I have already been browsing, or sometimes clicking a link to a new site.

I have not experienced issues with connectivity after first waking the system up, which a few exceptions. Unrelated to this issue, I sometime receive a message that the WiFi connection is too weak to use my Apple Watch to unlock the computer. This feature, along with using AirDrop, is the only reason I have WiFi enabled on this system. Again, this issue is not related to the issue I reported.
