You've installed what is considered by many experienced users in these forma to be akin to malware: CleanMyMac.

First, there is no reason to ever install or run any 3rd party "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus, VPN or security apps on your Mac.  This user tip describes what you need to know and do in order to protect your Mac: Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community.

There are no known viruses, i.e. self propagating, for Macs.  There are, however, adware and malware which require the user to install although unwittingly most of the time thru sneaky links, etc.

Anti Virus developers try to group all types as viruses into their ad campaigns of fear.  They do a poor job of the detecting and isolating the adware and malware.  Since there are no viruses these apps use up a lot of system resources searching for what is non-existent and adversely affect system and app performance.

There is one app, Malwarebytes, which was developed by a long time contributor to these forums and a highly respected member of the computer security community, that is designed solely to seek out adware and known malware and remove it.  The free version is more than adequate for most users.

Uninstall CMM according to the developer's instructions. Then rerun Etrecheck to make sure all supporting files for CMM have been removed.

Also you are getting somewhat low on free space on your boot drive. Try to maintain as much free space on your boot drive as possible for optimal system performance, as close to 80 GB as possible. If necessary a portable external SSD for additional storage like one of these OWC's ENVOY PRO portable SSDs.

Additionally, as P. Phillips mentioned make sure you keep a full and current backup of your boot drive. Drives do fail and if you don't have a backup your up a creek.

Understand, we are all working Remotely from all around the world.

Therefore, we do not have the On-Hands experience the User ( you ) has with this computer.

The next best thing for us to having an actual On-Hand experience on this computer is to follow the steps below

Download the Application Etrecheck directly from a well Respected ASC Contributor. And Safe to use.

The application is free or paid from added features.

Run the application with Full Disc Access ( Security & Privacy - Full Disc Access ).

It will take a Snap Shot -  both the hardware and software.

The Report will Not Reveal Any Personal Information.

Post back the Full Report - copy and paste - using the Additional Text Icon ( 3rd Icon to last )

We can have a look at the report for possible issues and may have possible suggestions to resolve the issues.

The user ( you ) can try the Xcode upgrade and maybe it will work.

The underling issues caused by CleanMyMac and the possible Drive Failing will remain regardless of the possible upgrade of Xcode and could push the computer beyond its abilities and to a possible total Drive Failure.

As has been monied by at least two Contributor - make a Time Machine Backup right away and before attempting the Xcode upgrade.

Good Luck 🇨🇦
