RAM problem

Hello everyone,

So for about one-week now, my Mac's RAM seems to drastically drop whenever I login and use my web browser. When I log on I have about 6GB of free RAM available, however, it rapidly drops to about 3-4GB whenever I load my web browser, and then it continues to drop, even if I am not doing anything. Now, I know RAM generally does this, but at a certain point I got a message stating "Your system has run out of application memory." This seems to be connecting to the latest iOS update released on June 14, despite my not running the latest iOS.

And, if I do not use a program to release and cleanup my RAM, my system will automatically freeze and lead me to force it into rebooting, especially when playing any kind of videos (YouTube, etc). I am running on macOS Mojave, and my system is an iMac (27-inch, Late 2012). I really do not want to upgrade my computer itself, and I know that macOS Catalina is the last iOS to support my computer type.

Is this a fixable issue, or is it just time to get a new system itself?

Q - " This seems to be connecting to the latest iOS update released on June 14, despite my not running the latest iOS. "

A - The last update to Mojave itself was in Sep 26, 2019 unless the use is referring to a Safari update which is a different matter

A - And agree with @BobTheFisherman.

Any Third Party Applications that will interfere with the normal operation of the OS, alter, modify, remove or delete or attempt to do so is an invitation for disaster and comprising the Operating System

Any of the below should be removed as per Developers Instructions

This will include CleanMyMac , This will include BitDefender

This will included Norton Antivirus , Sophos Av Software

Intego AntiVirus, McAfee, MacKeeper, Avast AntiVirus

Ad Guard, Webroot , ESET

The The Built in Security  is all that is required.

Well, then I am glad I am no longer using the VPN. And while removing Trend Micro from my system has semi-worked (though feel semi-bare and exposed without the virus protection), I am still dropping in RAM. I logged on with 6GB and I currently have 3.85-3.90GB. Is that normal?

Yes it is normal. Unused RAM is wasted RAM. Why would you pay for 8GB RAM then not use it. The MacOS manages RAM which is dynamic memory. Data is loaded into RAM based on usage and in preparation for anticipated need. If RAM was not used in this way your computer would be much slower.

No. Not Safari. But when the latest iOS was sent out for the current iOS on June 14, that is the same date my RAM began to show complications. My RAM complications began the same day, within 20 minutes of loading up my system, when the night prior it was running fine.

And while I understand people are saying to remove Third Party Applications... if I don't use the one I have, my Mac becomes useless, as it freezes completely after 20 minutes of use, and am unable to play any kind of streaming video. I simply do not understand why, all of a sudden, why my RAM just stopped functioning properly. It shouldn't be draining as fast it is, even when I'm not even doing anything with my system.

Would upgrading from macOS Mojave to macOS Catalina fix this "Your system has run out of application memory" issue, and the rapidly-fast web memory issue? I mean, I'm not one to want to go to macOS Catalina, but if it is the only fix, I will resolve to it.

I power cycled my system. RAM still seems to be dropping. Not as dramatically fast, but still at a significant drop. As for VPN, I've always used it when doing my banking for privacy and to watch those pesky YouTube region-blocked videos.

Using third party VPN services other than for creating a direct secure tunnel provides no security. In fact it routes all your private information to some third party server before they route it to the Iinternet as you would have done. The third party VPN provider can and does sell, share, release your data to whoever they want.
