Credit card fails on laptop, succeeds on iPhone

Starting a few days ago, the verification process for my credit card leaves me with a blank window and the process fails to continue. This has occurred with several unrelated vendors (but not all vendors). However, when I use the same card with my iPhone, the payment always goes through. The problem is independent of the browser, as I have the same result with Firefox and with Chrome (Firefox v78.15.0esr; Chrome v87.0.4280.141; Mac OS 10.10.5; iOS 15.1). And of course, there are enough funds in the credit card account.

Can anyone figure this out?

Hi John Howarth,

Are you able to test this behavior in Safari to see if it continues, as both browsers mentioned are developed by third parties.

Another test that can be used to further isolate this is safe mode. How to use safe mode on your Mac outlines the process for this test, and offers additional sections "If the issue continues in safe mode" and "If the issue doesn't continue in safe mode" to be followed depending on the results.

Let us know the results of all tests if this continues after those are completed.

Regards.

Hey there, and welcome to Apple Support Communities John Howarth,

We appreciate you reaching out to us about this matter and are here to help. We would like to ask you a couple of questions in order to get a better understanding. First, does this issue happen on any other User profiles? Also, does your credit card have any restrictions enabled through the bank? Secondly, are you using a VPN connection during the process? Finally, what is your Wi-Fi connection strength when this happens?

We thank you for your answers, they will help guide us to the next troubleshooting step.

Kindest regards!

Thanks for your reply. I only have the one user profile. Thre are no restrictions imposed by the bank (and the card works OK when I pay using my iPhone). I am not using a VPN. My wi-fi is very slow compared to most - in the region of 2Mb/sec. But that is the same wi-fi connection I am using with the iPhone.

The issue only occurs on my laptop, and it happens in the same way with Firefox and with Chrome: ie I am presented with a blank white window at the point where my purchase should be verified and then confirmed. That window stays there forever. The address bar shows an address which I assume is the one that it shoud be connected to - it has my bank's name somewhere in there.

I hope this helps!

Thank you,

John
