it's weird because i did fix it at one point by going into network, advanced settings, dns and adding 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 to the dns list, and this fixed it, but i was stupid and thought i could do it some other time and shut down the mac. now even with the new dns it gets stuck. is there a way to get it to work again? apple support mentioned time of day could affect this, what are good times to download updates and stuff?
There are factors:
1 - Like poor Wifi connection
2 - Slow wifi connection
3 - Too many other people downloading at the same time and Apple Severs are overloaded
4 - Software on the computer interfering with the download process including AntiVirus Software
Notation: Disabling the AV Software may or may not solve the issue. Removal of the AV Software may increase the chances of the download to perform as expected.
5 - Running behind a VPN which may increase Packet losses or corruption of the download
6 - If via wifi too many Other devices using the wifi at the same time reducing the Bandwidth to your computer.
7 - Best Results are via Ethernet Cable to Router
8 - Restart in Safe Mode and attempt the Software Update Applet in System Preference
Mac won't start in safe mode sadly, tried that. but i'll try the other things! also, i'm not sure how many people are updating big sur, i imagined since it's fairly old not many people would be trying to update from it? am i incorrect?

I have just attempted the Safe Boot method on an Ancient Mac Mini Circa 211 with High Sierra and on two M1 Apple Computers running Monterey 12.4 and Safe Boot does function as per provide linked methods.
Tried both, neither work. i'm using a desktop. i Usually use a logitech keyboard but i borrowed a friends' mac keyboard. it still doesn't work. people have talked about resetting vram and nvram but that doesn't seem to work.
