Manual control of Mac TV.app video brightness, contrast, etc?

Hello,

I've noticed the gamma or brightness or contrast changes automatically on my Mac when using TV.app to watch movies.

I can get this to change easily if I shine a light in the Mac's built-in camera, which TV.app apparently uses an an ambient light sensor.

It would be cool if there were, optionally, manual control of video display settings so that the brightness does not automatically adjust.

:) Chris.

Hello Lee thanks for the reply.

I just looked into the True Tone page and the preference panel on my Mac showed I already (months ago) turned off both True Tone and Automatically Adjust Brightness as neither checkbox was enabled for those two features. (I do have Night Shift enabled, however.)

The auto brightness changes during Apple TV.app are more like an automatic gamma adjustment where the midtones (or so) go up in brightness when I shine a light near the MacBook (Air M1 btw) camera and then return to lower brightness gamma when I remove the light.

The auto gamma adjust also occurs, btw, when I have the "Accessibility->Display->Display contrast" slider activated at any level. (The link you shared states:

"Some display accessibility settings, including Invert Colors, Grayscale, and Increase Contrast, might turn off True Tone."

and I've found that both the Accessibility contrast slider as well as the Accessibility contrast checkbox controls do not disable the auto gamma in TV.app.

I think it would be cool if macOS and TV.app allowed for automatic image adjustment to be disabled, and to just have the movie be shown as it is.

FWIW, other than the aforementioned "True Tone" and brightness controls, there is no automatic adjusrment for the TV app. Not sure what you are seeing unless despite being disabled they are still active.

Hello, there is definitely a gamma shift (or something) with some movies on my Mac's TV.app library. I recorded a video of the gamma shift in question. Please have a look here: https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/723526717

I recorded the screen with my iPhone (with exposure locked on the phone, btw). I shined a flashlight directly into the Mac's camera and you can see a gamma shift (or something) as the light is shined onto and then away from the camera lens. You can also see the flashlight light itself in that video at times. Curiously, this gamma shift does not occur on "American Graffiti" nor on "Casablanca" but it does occur on "Blade Runner 2049" and "Top Gun." (I've not tested all movies in my library.)
