Older LG TV does not recognize new 4k Apple TV
Is my older non-smart LG tv not able to connect with the latest 4k Apple TV? Is there anything I can do short of buying a new tv?

No, that shouldn’t matter. Any TV with HDMI-in would be supported.
Exactly what do you mean by “does not recognize”?
Initially, you may have to manually set your TV to take input from the HDMI port to which the Apple TV box is connected.
Try a different HDMI device on the same port, to test the HDMI port on the TV.
Try a different HDMI cable, to verify that the cable was fully functional.
Verify that the status light on the Apple TV box is glowing continuously.

If the Apple TV was used with a different TV, then its video settings may not match the current TV. That can be corrected with a procedure on the remote.
• If you see the Apple logo and then a black screen, hold Menu and Volume Down for 6 seconds, then release. Your Apple TV will switch to a new resolution every 20 seconds. Select OK to choose a resolution or Cancel to quit.
