Can I upgrade my "Mac OS El Capitan" to a new or newer OS?

Can I upgrade my "Mac OS El Capitan" to a new or newer OS? I mean, can I Just buy a new OS and not have to buy a whole new physical Mac computer? I want to try to keep my current Mac and upgrade the Operating System!

Thanks!

iMac, OS X 10.11

Click on the Apple logo at the top left of your screen and select the option " About This Mac "

Then in Overview ( arrowed), you will get something similar to what is shown in the example below.

Below example shows MacBook Pro ( 13 inch,Mid 2009).

What does your's say? Model, size and year?

If you can tell us, we can tell you if you can upgrade or not and if you can upgrade we can tell you what you can upgrade to.
