since apple tv remotes are Apple devices (usually linked to an apple account) and since the remote is so small, is there a way to get the “Find My:” app to search for the TV remote without buying separate i-tags?

That is not supported for the current models remotes.
The remote itself doesn’t know where it is, and can’t communicate its location to cloud services or nearby devices.
You’ll have to search the old fashioned way, by looking under cushions etc.
