It's possible that it may be going dark on its own if it's related to the Auto-Lock setting. This feature automatically puts the display to sleep and locks the device. You can change the timer for that in Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock, then set a length of time.

If it instead seems like the display goes dark on its own, and there is a small spinning gear (or Apple logo) before it appears at the Home Screen, then this page may be able to assist: If your iOS or iPadOS device restarts or displays the Apple logo or a spinning gear unexpectedly - Apple Support
