Apple watch battery charge when unpaired

The last 2 watches I've purchased.. I delayed setting them up until I sold the older model. I was able to charge and see the battery level of the new watches without setting them up. You should be fine

You said you were able to see the battery level without setting up the watch. The question is, how? When I turn on the watch, it just starts taking me through the setup.
