Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.
NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;
• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)
• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
• Disables user-installed fonts
• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files
Hi there RonLC,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand you have an issue with Bluetooth on your Mac. First, we'd recommend restarting your Mac. That usually resolves the specific issue you describe. Then, work through the steps in this article:
If you can't connect your Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, or Magic Trackpad to your Mac - Apple Support
Keep us updated with how it goes.
Take care.
Hi RonLC,
When you navigate from the Apple menu to System Preferences, then click Bluetooth are you able to toggle Bluetooth on here? If so, when toggled are any devices found?
If not, navigate to the system information and check for the Bluetooth hardware. "To open System Information directly, press and hold the Option key and choose Apple menu > System Information. You can also use Spotlight to find System Information, or open it from the Utilities folder of your Applications folder."
You can also find those steps and information here: About System Information on your Mac
If no hardware is found run a diagnostic to be sure: Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac
Should the issue remain, reach out to Apple Support directly to assist with your service options.

Thanks Soosie. Connecting isn't a problem. Getting bluetooth to turn on is. When I try to turn it on the button snaps back to the off position or stays in the on position but shows purple next to the slider and Bluetooth stays off with a slash thru the icon. I've tried shutdown, restart, erasing the drive and restoring from time machine.
Thanks OrigamiFan1 for the good info. I checked system info. Address: NULL. Is that okay? Discoverable: Off. That doesn't look good either. It did pass a diagnostics test by the Genius Bar techie guy he suggested I try the erase and restore which didn't work. Hitting a brick wall trying to fix it.
Hi RonLC,
As your Bluetooth controller is not providing an address, additional troubleshooting up to service will be required. Use Get Support to connect with our experts to identify the best resolution for this concern.
Regards.
Thanks to all for the wonderful info and advice!
