5 TB External hard drive says “not enough space” but it’s empty.

I have a 4TB Seagate hard drive that I was using with a Windows PC. I had about 800GB of data on it. I tried to back up some files from my MacBook to it but drive said “Not enough space”

Reformatted it (erased in disc utility using Mac journal extended)

still getting “Not enough space” error.

Bought brand new 5 TB hard drive still getting “Not enough space” error,

I can copy over about 40 GB before getting the error.

Thanks for the helpful info both.

I don’t get why my internal memory affects transfer of data to external hard drive. Instead of transferring entire bulky iCloud Documents folder to hard drive.

I have to copy 1 folder at a time to my desktop, then transfer to hard drive then trash folder and rinse and repeat. Is this normal or is there possibly some other issue going on?
