Caps in voice recognition

I used to be able to say, “Cap“ and then a word the first letter of which I wanted capitalized, and it would be capitalized. That function is no longer working. Instead, voice recognition actually writes out the word “cap.”

I rely heavily on voice recognition as a person with disabilities who is running an international business. I don’t have time for simple capitalization to take so long. I can’t say how many times I’ve had to delete the word “cap,” for one thing.

Apple responds by telling me to check my microphone, my background noise etc. etc. The function used to work and it doesn’t work anymore. The problem is with voice recognition, not me.

It's working fine on my iPad Pro 11 M1. Try a simple Forced Restart:

On your iPad without a Home button

Press and quickly release the volume button closest to the top button.

Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.

Press and hold the top button until the device begins to restart.

On your iPad with a Home button

Press and hold both the Home button and the top button until you see the Apple logo.

Let me simplify the directions:

  • Press and quickly release the volume up button
  • Then immediately press and quickly release the volume down button
  • Then immediately press and keep holding the top power button (keep holding past the slide to power off) until the screen goes dark and until the Apple Logo appears, then let go of the power button.

When the iPad comes back up, enter your passcode and see if dictation works as expected.

Good point! Thank you! I did what I could. After I pressed the third button I got something different than what you’re saying. See screenshot. So I used what was on the screen and then, after the iPad Air shut off, pushed the big button again to turn it back on. Regardless, I went from an iPad Air three to an iPad Air five last week, with everything that implies, and the problem remains.

OK, did it, and it didn’t help. I kept trying, and capitalization only worked once and then, lol, “corrected” itself to the word “cap” followed by an uncapitalized word. I really think there’s something wrong with voice recognition on iPad Air, but appreciate everything you’re trying so much.
