Montery 12.4 issues on iMac?

I have a 2017 27-inch iMac running 12.3.1 Montery. I have the little red circle over my System Prefs icon on the dock with a '1' in it indicating their is a software update available for 12.4.

I was about to update it, but I typically check online first to see if there are issues with updates before doing them and with 12.4 there seems to be quite a lot, especially installation issues. But, these reports are a few months back and I wondered:

A. Is it now safe to do this update?

B. If it goes wrong can I go back to previous OS version without having to do clean install and mess about for a day re-installing software and codes etc?

C. Is there any way to get rid of the annoying red circle with a '1' in it on my System Prefs icon on the doc so I'm not constantly reminded of it in case I don't want to upgrade anytime soon?

Thanks.

C: You can, though it's more complicated than removing notification bubbles for other apps. It does require Terminal, but is still quite easy.

Open Terminal (CMD + Space), then type "Terminal" and hit Return

Type this command exactly as shown, then press return-
defaults write com.apple.systempreferences AttentionPrefBundleIDs 0

After that, refresh the dock with this command-
killall Dock

That should do the trick! To get the notification bubbles for software back, simply use the same commands, but change the 0 to a 1 in the first command.

thanks Bubba! I learned something new today!

A: I have not experienced any issues with this update, though some users have reported battery drain.

B: Well, you'd have to make a bootable installer, which may be complicated - How to create a bootable installer for macOS

Hope that helped!

With any update/upgrade process the first thing to do beforehand is to uninstall any antivirus/cleanup app, turn off VPN if installed, disable reloading apps on startup and disable startup items.

Once you have done this start the update process and if the install is successful then you can re-enable startup items. Don’t reinstall antivirus/cleanup apps as they frequently cause problems.

I've been using Monterey since it was launched. no issues. even after the few updates up to and including 12.4. still no issues. usually if there are issues from an upgrade, it's usually because of incompatible software. you should check your 3rd party apps for compatibility. (which it appears you have done)

so:

A: it's no more or less safe than it's been in the past. I always have had smooth updates / upgrades, while others have not.

B: AFAIK, you need to erase and reinstall to revert to a prior macOS.

C: sorry, no. the only way to get rid of the red "badge" is to apply the update / upgrade.
