The idea that third parties, with no special knowledge of MacOS internals, are capable of providing "protection" that Apple somehow can't or won't provide is laughable.
These pitches are encouraging you to be fearful, so that you will buy these third-party products. They are reprehensible money grabs.
this Apple technical document should add more information:

Nothing that is worth having.
Mainly what it does is scan your files non-stop, wasting resources at a phenomenal rate. It is comparing patterns in files with patterns in obsolete Windows software viruses. it is likely that there WILL be a match, such as a graphics files pattern. when that happens, your Mac will crash without so much as an error message.
But NONE of that is any threat to your already well protected Macintosh. Your Mac protects you from having bad stuff become EXECUTABLE without your explicit permission.
AVAST (and others like it) are so close to being a total scam, they are almost indistinguishable.
nothing is going to work better than common sense and education.
Keep your Mac up-to-date with security patches and OS updates. It is the best software protection policy out there.
Apple builds in the features you nee to protect your Mac:
Effective defenses against malware and ot… - Apple Community
What utility do the AVAST software offer?
You should check with Avast - they will make claims of course. Most Mac users won't install that kind of stuff, so I am not interested in any claims they make. And I will not install it to test it.
