With our Contact list being spread across geographically, it would be nice if we can save timezones for each contact that way minimally before giving them a call we know their local timezone and do not have to look for it everytime before contacting the person

It's a great suggestion you have for the contacts app. Right now that's not possible.
What you can do is send it as an idea to Apple through their feedback website: Product Feedback - Apple
There are a few ways you can note the times of your contacts in different zones.
Firstly, you could ask Siri the local time of your contact before calling.
You could also enter a place name and its time in the Clock app using the World Clock tab on the bottom left of the screen. It can act as a quick and accurate check of the current time in a city. Apple has a support document which addresses this called See the time in cities worldwide on iPhone.
Another way is to add the time zone and difference in hours in the Notes field in the entry in the Contact app.
