mac mail smart links won't stay on

I get it that turning on edit/substitutions/smart links is required now to turn on creation of smart links by default when editing a message in Mac Mail. I've had that turned on by default since whenever those steps are required, but Mac Mail is now turning off that selection after I send each email.


In other words, now I have to select edit/substitutions/smart links for every new email I author. It turns itself off after I send the email. I'd like it to stay turned on permanently, for all email boxes.


It seems like something broke. Is there a workaround to fix this?


I've shut down and restarted Mail. I've rebooted. No help.


I'm on a MacBook Pro, M1, macOS Monterrey 12.4, Mail version 16.0.

MacBook Pro 13″, OS X 10.11

It appears that that Smart Links keep turning off for each new email you write, and we're glad to provide assistance.


How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support -- Since this is unexpected behavior, we'd like for you to restart your Mac in safe mode and test. Once you've determined whether the setting stays on or not, restart normally to exit safe mode. Please be aware that restarting in safe mode takes a bit longer than usual. Here's the reason why:

Safe mode prevents your Mac from loading certain software as it starts up, including login items, system extensions not required by macOS, and fonts not installed by macOS. It also does a basic check of your startup disk, similar to using First Aid in Disk Utility. And it deletes some system caches, including font caches and the kernel cache, which are automatically created again as needed.


If the issue didn't happen while in safe mode, see if it works after a normal restart.
