The best method is to keep it charged and in a place where the phone is “on network.”
This will allow the owner to use FindMy and provide return instructions on-screen using “Lost Mode.”
If no message is received after a few days, return it the the most appropriate Lost & Found - which might be the Police if it was found in a public area.
