when my iMac crashed I lost all my photos although most of them are stored in iCloud. When I open them the photos open in kilobytes. How do I get them to open in megabytes?

Where are you seeing this? If you are lucky, you are just seeing the thumbnail. Try to export one as the original and check it in Preview

Thank you for the speedy response. It is a big help in restoring photos, if extremely tedious. I don't have to recover all of them, but now I know I can. I did have another way of doing this, however, did not write down the directions and we don't remember what we think we can. Thanks again for your help.
